Formed in 1974 in Kitchener, Ontario, Helix became a staple of Canada’s hard rock scene. With the addition of Brent “The Doctor” Doerner and Paul Hackman in 1976, the band developed their signature twin-guitar attack. Their breakthrough came with 1983’s No Rest for the Wicked, featuring the classic “Heavy Metal Love.”
Helix exploded internationally with Walkin’ the Razor’s Edge (1984) and its hard-hitting single “Rock You,” which gained heavy MTV rotation—including an infamous X-rated version of the video.
Throughout the ’80s, Helix toured globally with KISS, Alice Cooper, Motörhead, and Ian Gillan. Despite the tragic loss of Paul Hackman in 1992, Brian Vollmer carried the torch forward with an evolving cast of top-tier musicians from Brighton Rock, Killer Dwarfs, Harem Scarem, and Crash Kelly.
The band’s legacy hit a pop culture note in 2003 when they were featured in the cult hit series Trailer Park Boys. In 2005, Vollmer released his autobiography Gimme An R! and followed it up with the unplugged album Smash Hits…Unplugged in 2010—some tracks of which now appear remixed on Helix 50.
