6 Pack Tune Up – Week of November 11, 2024
Alright, here’s what’s catching my ear this week. Massive Wagons kick things off with a relentless pace that hits just right, and Miss Velvet’s voice? Total showstopper. There’s some Stonesy swagger in the mix, a bit of ’80s glam flavor, and some melodic rock that reminds me of Styx and Boston. I think. But let’s see what YOU think. Give this six pack a listen this week and hear them on WTYU.rocks. And if you’re thinking about buying any of the music
Massive Wagons – “Sleep Forever”
This one’s got a frenetic pace that just doesn’t quit. I can’t help but relate to the constant buzz of thoughts—so yeah, the relentless tempo and repetitive lyrics totally work for me. And they get some Scrabble points for using the word ‘sinew’. Massive Wagons a band I like a lot and they are tops on the list of representing NWOCR, The New Wave of Classic Rock that we love and focus on at WTYU.rocks
Juliet’s Not Dead – “King & Queen”
Another quick tempo rocker with a cool message about surrounding yourself with good and healthy, people accepting of you as they will help you to be a better version of yourself. And who can’t stand to be a little better, am I right?
Lions In The Street – “Walking Back to You”
Give me this kind of swing and swagger all day long. It’s got that Stonesy-ish vibe with a touch of Allman Brothers groove. Great vocals, great playing. If you’re into The Black Crowes or even dig back to Georgia Satellites, this one’s will hit the sweet spot.
White Tyger – “Almost Home”
Yeah, the name and logo scream ’80s glam rock, and sure, they’ve got that flavor, but don’t box ‘em in just yet. They’ve been a cover band for years before going original, so might be why their songs mix up flavors. Might still be finding their way, or maybe they just like to keep it interesting. Either way, I dig this tune. Not into it? Check out their other stuff—there’s probably something there you’ll vibe with.
Miss Velvet – “Strut”
This one kicks off with a touch of Deep Purple’s “Hush” to my ears—just a touch—but then Miss Velvet takes over. Her voice? Killer. Seriously, one of the best rock voices I’ve come across lately. The song is a little infectious to me as I listen to it. Simple lyrics but I’d imagine they’re doing what was intended, get me to come hither and strut. It worked Miss Velvet. I wanna hear more.
Cats In Space – “Immortal”
Early ’80s melodic rock with a hint of even earlier rock sounds. Styx, Boston—they come to mind, but nothing exactly on point, just that general feel. I can’t quite put my finger on it, so it stays in rotation until I figure it out. Either way, I’m enjoying it! Melodic rock like this can be hit or miss for me, but in this case, I’m all in. Oh, and Paul Manzi’s singing—found out he sings for The Sweet too. Makes sense.
